Q: Is it more important to pay off debts or to save for retirement?

In an effort to break up the tedium of my life I like to ask random questions about completely meaningless things. (More here). The thing is, you never really know what people are going to say - even people you know fairly well. I asked people what they thought about this grand piece of lady equipment. It really inspired some vitriol! (as well as something else that I can’t quite identify):

“Women’s erect nipples, authentic or fraudulent, are disgustingly pleasant.”

“Not only can you appear to be sexually aroused at all times (filling out tax returns, eating rice, attending your boss’s funeral, taking a dump), you can also look like you don’t know what bras are.”

“For tramps only. I spend most of my time trying to hide my over-active nipples. Even in a padded bra I am concerned that one of them will poke someone in the eye and I might be sued. I hear that men find this attractive. If getting your eye poked out gives you a boner, give me a call.”

“Just one question, do they make them for men too?”

“This bra is about the dumbest thing I have ever seen in a bra….thought no one wanted their headlights showing???”

“I am so angry that it exists. Shit that is only there to please men drives me nuts. There is no woman who would put that bra on for its inherent beauty so fuck you to all the ladies who would consider buying that. FUCK YOU. People are such assholes.”

“I want one of these bras in each color.”

Oatmeal Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup low-fat milk
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons canola oil
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1. Combine the milk and rolled oats in a bowl, and set aside.

2. Sift together the flours, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt.

3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, then add the buttermilk and whisk together. Then whisk in the vanilla extract and the oil.

4. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and quickly whisk together. Do not overbeat; a few lumps are okay. Fold in the oats and milk. Let sit for one hour, or refrigerate overnight.

5. If necessary, spray the hot griddle with pan spray. Drop by 3 to 4 tablespoons onto the hot griddle. Place six or seven blueberries on each pancake. Cook until bubbles begin to break through, two to three minutes. Turn and cook for about 30 seconds to a minute on the other side, or until nicely browned. Remove from the heat, and continue until all of the batter is used up.

6. Serve hot with a small amount of butter and maple syrup.

Franklin Expedition

1845–46: Expedition winters on Beechey Island. Three crewmen die of tuberculosis and are buried.
1846: Ships trapped in the ice off King William Island.
1847, May 28: Date of first note, says "All well"
1847, June 11: Franklin dies.
1848: Date of second note, saying 24 men have died and the survivors plan to start marching south on April 26 to the Back River
1851 (?): Inuit hunters see four men still trying to head south, last sighting of survivors (as reported to Charles Hall)
1854: John Rae interviews local Inuit, who give him items from the expedition and tell him the men starved to death, after resorting to cannibalism

How did they go from "all well" in May to Franklin dying a scant 2 weeks later? I guess that's British optimism in action.

My cold has progressed to stage 2. The gross stage. Lots of nose blowing. As long as I take lots of decongestants and slather myself with generic-brand Vick’s vapo rub, I can make it through the day.

The bigger question is why am I susceptible to every bug out there? Is it abnormal to get the flu in October and a cold in December?

Maybe my parents raised me in an oxygen bubble and I never built up any immunity. I don’t think that’s the case. I remember eating dirt.
